IDAHO FALLS YOUTH SYMPHONY

2010 AUDITION INFORMATION
Eligibility:
- Students must be in grades 7-12.
- Students must participate in their school's instrument class or program, if available.
- Students must be able to commit to a weekly rehearsal schedule for the full symphony season (September through November, and January through April). Rehearsals are held Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Idaho Falls High School Band Room, with the first rehearsal on Thursday, September 16, 2010.
- Accepted students must pay a $35.00 enrollment fee.
Audition Date/Time/Place:
- Thursday, September 2, 2010 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. - Idaho Falls High School
- Students may arrive at any time. Students arriving early should not have a long wait time.
- Warm-up will be in the Art Room.
- Woodwinds, brass, and percussion will audition in the Band Room.
- Strings will audition in the Choir Room.

Audition Requirements:
Strings:

Be prepared to play A Major, C Major, D Major, and the following melodic minor scales: a, d, e (3 octaves preferred on all scales). Two will be chosen. One slurred in 2, 3, 4, or 8 notes per bow, the other spiccato at your own comfortable speed. Scales must be played from memory.

A short (8 measures or so), slow selection of your choice.

A short (8 to 16 measures or so), fast selection of your choice.
Woodwinds & Brass:

Chromatic scale up and down (as much of the range of your instrument as you can) legato-tongued at your chosen speed.

Be prepared to play F Major, A flat Major, D Major, G Major, and A Major scales (2 octaves preferred). Two will be chosen, one slurred and the other tongued at your own comfortable speed. Scales are at written pitch, not at concert pitch. Scales must be played from memory.

A short (8 measures or so), slow selection of your choice.

A short (8 to 16 measures or so), fast selection of your choice.
Percussion: student must play all instruments, which will be provided

Play 4 rudiments of your choice on the snare drum (slow to fast). Play a segment of a snare drum solo or etude.

You will be asked to tune 2 timpani to given pitches, then demonstrate a roll.

Be prepared to play F Major, B flat Major, E flat Major, and G Major scales on the xylophone (two octaves). Two will be chosen. Play at your own speed. Scales must be played from memory.
